Values And Design Research Of The Public Internal Corner Space In Streets

The paper addressed research on the design and management of the Internal Corner Space in the street. Contemporary urban design in China is more concerned about the city's landmark space (such as plaza and wide roads) but ignore the common public outdoor living room. As a universal public urban arena, Public Internal Corner Space are important locations for people enjoying the city's life. The paper take the theory of Post-modernism and the Danish scholar Jan Gehl(a Danish scholar's theory about Life in the City as theoretical basis. Start from the positive influences of the public Internal Corner Space, then finding some dimensions that play important roles to achieve the influences above, finally discussing how to design and use them to get better results. The article mainly focuses on two aspects:Firstly:the dimensions of the value. Three key attributes of the Public Internal Corner Space are:Shared for all citizens; Scale is more suitable to people and It is landscape. The research on the dimensions of value means finding which dimension is crucial to the space's attributes. It includes five aspects:Aesthetics, Social, Time, Function and Tradition. Aesthetics concern about the environmental aesthetics; socially focus on how to encourage public participation and the equality for everyone; time point means make use of time cycle and the sustainable use of space. Traditional aspect discusses the geographical and traditional habit in the place.Secondly:site design and implementation. The process of design and implementation is carried out at three levels:The design process;a way of promoting urban life; Public participation. The design process tells some ways to construct cultural symbols. Promoting urban life means make some rules or ways to make the place more useful. Public participation focus on the people's right. Eventually given some constructive design techniques and management methods, aim to more effectively meet the various dimensions of Public Internal Corner Space, and then better achieve it's positive influences.
