As the result of the globalization of energy-saving and emission-reduction, Green Lighting Projects raise more and more concerns. HID lamp is one of green lighting source. Therefore, development of the driving circuit of the lamp, namely the electronic ballast has become an important research object. A lot of researches focus on Metal Halide Lamps and ballast currently, but few for High Pressure Sodium Lamps and its ballast. However, Sodium Lamps are widely used in road, airport and Greenhouse Lighting. The first part of the thesis states the research background, including the classification, application, structure and feature of HID lamps. Then the current research situation of ballast at domestic and abroad is given, including some difficulties and hotspots.Modeling for HID lamp has always been one of the difficulties. As a special load, HID lamp has nonlinearity properties. To build a proper model for this special load must be a great help for designer. Chapter two introduces the research and analysis on the High Pressure Sodium lamp model, including stable model and start-up model. A new mathematical model which gives a better description to the relation of electron concentration and lamp conductance based on classic Francis Formula is demonstrated in this chapter. Simulation and experiment have proved its reliability and practicality. There are many kinds of HID lamp ballast topology, and the inverter circuit always plays the core role for each kind. Chapter three study on the inverter circuit, and introduces a mathematical model of resonant circuit. Simulation result with new High Pressure Sodium lamp mathematical model is given. An example of design of GE 400V/600W High Pressure Sodium Lamp ballast is demonstrated with experiment to verify the analysis..EMI is an unavoidable problem in power electronic products especially in high-frequency working situation. Chapter four introduces the EMC analysis on 600W High Pressure Sodium lamp ballast. A procedure for designing ac line EMI filters for HPS ballast is presented. This procedure is based on the analysis of conducted EMI problems and the use of LISN. Design examples are given, and results are experimentally verified.
