The High-Intensity-Discharge (HID) Lamps are widely used in lighting system for the high luminous efficacy, long life and good color rendering. High-Pressure-Sodium (HPS) Lamps have the best combination of the above properties and are considered as ideal light sources. Therefore the design of the electronic ballast for the lamps is an important part of the Green Lighting Project. In fact, the electronic ballast is also a kind of power supply converter, but, because of the especial requirement of the HID lamps for electronic ballast, the design of it is very complex. The control circuit built with conventional analog control is unavoidably cumbersome, the digital control method can simplify the design of circuit, and can satisfy the requirement of the lamps well.In this paper, first, the igniting methods are verified by simulation on the base of the analysis of the igniting characteristic. Then, the mechanism, effects and characteristics of acoustic resonance phenomena of the HID lamps are investigated. All kinds of circuit topologies sorted by methods which can eliminate acoustic resonance, are summarized and analyzed. A suitable method is chosen in the design. A PSpice model of the HPS lamp is built, and it is analyzed by simulation. At the end of the paper, the digital electronic ballast for 250W HPS lamps is developed successfully on the base of above research, the design process is introduced in detail. The simulation and experimental result is satisfied with the request. The result approve the theory analysis and design completely.
