As the implement of greenness lighting projects, it is focusing attention upon applying the new power electronictics technologies comprehensively for electric lighting.So it will be necessary to seek some lighting equipments with the characteristics of greenness,high luminous efficiency,long life,good colour rendering ,and so on. High Pressure Sodium (HPS) has the hightest luminous efficiency in multitude of lighting sources, and also has long life,good colour rendering good qualities,it is so-called the third generation lighting source to replace the traddtional ones. It,however,has some deficiencies,such as low power factor, low luminous efficiency,large volume when it is suited to the core -coil ballast,it has not satisfied with the needs of greenness lighting and economize energy in such an appealing to save energy time. So it is time to design one kind electronic ballast with the characteristics of high power factor,high luminous efficiency,small volume and high Electro Magnetic Compatibility(EMC) to suite to the HPS,and this trend will be one direction with more foreground. This papper is based on the relatively detailed theory analyses of the principles and structures of discharge vapour lamp,electronic ballast and it's EMC design,and puts forward one kind project designed for electronic ballast and also get further validations in some experiments. It also make with some summarizations and prospects for the application of HPS electronic ballast and further study on it .The main contents of studies on This kind electronic ballast in this dissertation are as follow:1. Some deeply analyses of the principles and characteristics of discharge vapour lamp.2. Some analysis and comparisons between different topology structures of HPS electronic ballast, it's controle methods, capabilities and specialties, and then one design scheme of high frequency electronic ballast is put forward for higher power HPS.3. Some studies on the sound resonance mechanism of HPS,and one scheme is brought forward to avoiding sound resonance of higher power HPS,that is, using switch capacitance method to control the tube current.it is preferablly vadidated comparatively in some experiments.4. Design one new kind of ignite circuit,the controle pulse transformer, through studying on the characteristics of HPS in cold and heat condition,it leave out some insulate measures between the strong and feeble signals and also can protect HPS from being ignited frequently in abnormal conditions.5. Some technics methods to improve the EMC of electronic ballast are broughtforward through study on it's EMC, it also has some instructivet means to design higher power HPS electronic ballast.6. Some necessary protective measures with higher power HPS electronic ballast through analyzing the bad run conditions,including low voltage,overheated,over current ,defend thunder ,etc.
