A Discussion On Exterior Space Of The Ancient Town In Chengdu District By The Method Of Typology

Ancient towns of Chengdu are structural bodies with a long-term historical accumulation, reflecting the awareness of regional culture and the development of material civilization. They have variable and significant types. This is the quintessence of ancient town.This paper tries to analyse the structure of exterior space with a typology method; deeply learn the influence of traditional culture in Chengdu Plain; search for the discipline of morphology and histology, and finally obtain a characteristic study of exterior space.The content can be divided into two parts.In the first part, ancient towns of Chengdu are classified into three-major sections:"Water gestate Chengdu", "Nature' s storehouse" and "The sea refuses no river" as a generation environment of ancient town cluster. Those three sections which break traditional generation background are reciprocal causation and supporting. Then we put forward form influence factors of ancient town cluster upon it, mainly including central cities, water network and road network.The second part is the main part of research. In this part, exterior space is divided into four categories:boundary, frame,point and group. Based on it,we research every parts' property and combination modes, dispaly the discipline of space organization on material space, and ultimately summarize type features of each part.The final conclusion has been reached after the research to exterior space of ancient towns. It is a characteristic conclusion about types of every exterior space.
