In the simulating training of modern wars, verisimilitude of battlefield situation is invested with more and more importance and necessity. But the traditional 2 dimensional (2D) military symbol is unable to show the 3D battlefield situation vividly. Comprehensive investigation of 3D military symbols, therefore, is imperative and also is a crucial and urgent technique to express battlefield situation.Focusing on the exploration of adaptive methods to model 3D military symbols, this paper put enormous effort upon the investigation and practicing of characteristics of both 2D military symbols and 3D battlefield situation. Major contents of this paper are listed as follows.1. Figure characteristics and construction rules of 2D military symbols are analyzed. Under the discussion of characteristics and relating theories of 3D battlefield situation, expression methods for 3D military symbols are proposed. Then, 3D military symbols are classified and described, according to texture symbols, model symbols and irregular symbols.2. Modeling method for each 3D military symbol class is proposed. Technologies for the methods are analyzed and discussed to construct an initial 3D military symbol system, which will provide due technical basis for further construction of integrated 3D military symbol systems.3. Problems of terrain matching and symbol picking-up, commonly existed in the plotting process under discontinuous 3D battlefield environment, are thoroughly investigated. For each military symbol class, a particular matching method is provided, analyzed, and finally experimented.Researches of 3D military symbols in this paper have been adequately applied in the development of an equipment-typed project. Application practices verified that the methods and corresponding software modules have received favorable effects.
