With close combination of the electronic measurement know-how and the computer technology, the Arbitrary Waveform Generator (AWG) emerged as a kind of new signal generator. The so-called AWG as an electronic device has a very bright future by virtue of enabling to generate a large amount of standarad and user-defined signal and guaranteeing high presicion, high stability, reproducibility and easy operation.AWG, based on the DDS technology, takes the high speed memory as waveform data-searching table and synthesizes the waveform of memory by high speed D/A converter which could flexibly generate many kinds of waveform, features high resolution, high stability, fast transition in frequency, high consistency in phase and comparatively broad band width.The thesis mainly covers the following four aspects:1. The theory and principles of DDS and PCI bus.2. Design and realization of the hardware in AWG. Use bus controller PCI 9052 to realize PCI bus protocal, convert complicated PCI bus interface into comparatively simpler interface. Make use of FPGA to reduce the power consumption in circuits, minimize the hardware size. Make online design, debug and programme available in a FPGA based system development.3. Design and realization of software in AWG. Use Windriver device driver model, modify in detail by Windows DDK, simplify the procedures, upgrade software development efficiency, develop a user friendly graphical user interface under Visual C++ programming environment.4. Test of AWG. Monitor and measure the signals produced by the referred AWG with oscilloscope, the results show the AWG works well and gives intended signals complying with the technical requirements.
