Nowadays with the development of freeway in our country the traffic accidents have been increasing. Freeway is one-way road. The survey indicates that most malignant accidents are rear-ending collisions. At present the automobile anti-collision devices are mainly based on radar technology which can not be used in general because of its instability and high price. This paper presented a new system for rear-end collision alarm based on digital scale and image processing, which has been accomplished. The research is divided into two parts: the estimation of the longitudinal position of cars and the estimation of the lateral position of cars. The project of digital scale solves the first task. A digital scale contains wireless transceiver and microprocessor, and is placed between every 100 meters along freeway, just as the coordinates along freeway. The transceiver placed in the car will transmit information to the nearest digital scale for register. This digital scale receives the information and judges the safety grade of this car according to the register information of other frontal cars which is received from the two frontal digital scales, and finally transmits the safety grade information to the transceiver in the car. Besides the vehicle register information from every ten digital scales is collected and sent to a data control center so that the center can supervise all vehicles on the freeway. The method for lane detection is based on vision sensor fixed on the car. The paper presented two algorithms by analyzing the feature of the images from the camera: the algorithm based on Discrete Cosine Transform in frequency domain.According to the above content of our research the thesis demonstrated the design principle of our project, analyzed the problems involved in our design, and designed the hardware and software of the system. The experimental result satisfies the pre-concerted requirement.
