Moats that used as ancient city defense engineerings were extremely characteristic elements in Chinese citiy structures, and played an important role in urban forms and space structures. The process of formation and development of the moat in Ji'nan and the value and deficiencies the role it played in the city are systematically discussed in this article. The relationship between the moat and city elements are studyed respectively, and referencing to waterfront area development experience at home and abroad, preliminary constructive suggestions are proposed according to the existing problems and disadvantages. Main contents as follows:The study background is summarized and the practical significance and study methods of this article are introduced, and the research scope and two basic concepts involved in this paper are described briefly in introduction part.The process of waterfront construction and development at abroad and native and the development dynamic are analysed in Chap.1. Five summarized basic principles and construction policies and etc. are propossed based on cases to provide beneficial experience for the waterfront areas of the moat in Ji'nan.Changes of Ji'nan city and country city from Lixia ancient city till before liberation are described firstly in Chap.2, expatiating the historical development process of Ji'nan moat based on the background of developing process of Ji'nan city. Secondly, the structure of the river areas of the moat are studyed, and finally, the existing cruxes of the present situation of the moat are analysed and social deep reasons that caused downfall of river areas are pointed out.At first, current development background of the moat including aspects of social economy, planning structure, tourism, historic city conservation and etc. of Ji'nan, are integrally investigated in Chap.3. Based on that, the value of the moat in modern city are described systematically, and at last, deficiencies of the river area during the development process are proposed.By theoretical research and integrated field work and focus group discussion of five aspects on space structures of the moat and the city, city traffics, city ecosystems, city life, and historic city conservation, deficiencies are analysed, and suggestions and feasible strategies are proposed in Chap.4.Concluding remarks part summarizes full text, and puts forward insufficient and prospects of future development.
