Recently, production design and development means in the enterprise has been promoted compared with previous. But the automation of the traditional CAD system which depends on geometric model is limited in the lower level. Especially the lack of the induction-arrangement on the design knowledge and the realization of the sharing and reusing on the knowledge. These factors lead to the lower class of the production and the lack of the competitiveness in the market. The rapid design method which based on the reuse of the knowledge is emerging on this background. The domain of the mechanical product design knowledge is various in kinds and complicated in structure. The manifestation of knowledge is various in kind, too. The knowledge base system is responsible for save, management and use of the domain knowledge. it is also the key foundation of realization of the production rapid design. It has important research significance in promotion the level of the mechanical product design.Mechanical product design is a typical knowledge-intensive work, experience shows that the designer will spend 80% of the working time on collecting the useful knowledge and information. The essence of the product design is a problem solving process based on knowledge. Firstly, the classification and characteristics of the knowledge on mechanical product design is analyzed. Later, the research on the process of the mechanical product design is done. The paper also promotes the decomposability of the design target .the functional requirement of knowledge based system for rapid design is also analyzed. The structure model and the key point of its realization about the knowledge based system is also promoted in this paper.Finding a processing-technology for knowledge that accords with the knowledge characteristics in the mechanical product design field is one of the emphases in the research of this system. This paper summarize the method and process of knowledge acquisition , representation and reasoning and put forward the method of acquisition and representation for product cases and experience rules .This paper put forward the integrated reasoning model of CBR and RBR ,then analysis the strategy and process of search and reasoning applied to mechanical product design.According to the integration between the knowledge based system and the product design platform and the realization of the knowledge storage and management in the knowledge based system, the key technology of the secondary development about UG ,the database development and accessing ,the ergodic in the tree of assembly, the extraction technology of the attribution about the components ,and all these technology application in the realization of the knowledge based system.Finally, as the verification for the former research , the dynamic link library technology is used in the UGNX4.0 platform, the product rapid design for the knowledge based system is developed based on the design knowledge management and rapid design about the steering gear of a Company, the whole structure design of the system is realized the paper described the organization-frame and organization-form of the knowledge based system and the realization of the database storage in the system. The function realization of the knowledge based management system is described too, an application example is given in this paper.
