Nowadays, with the development of the science and technologies and the improvement of people's standard of living, people make more and more demands of medical treatment level. Many advanced control technologies are used in the design and development of the medical equipment.Currently, bone-drilling tools used in surgery do not include any means for the control of penetration. When break-through is detected, the drilling will stop in order to prevent excessive penetration of the drill bit. This thesis presents the development of a precision skull drilling machine. The drill is driven by a DC motor, whose current is proportional to the cutting torque. The current sense detects the feed back signal of current , we can depend on this to judge the penetration of the drill bit. A step motor controls the feed rate of the drill, and it stops feeding when the bone whose thickness is unknown is drilled through. In this paper, an uPSD SCM is used as the processor for the control system. A closed-loop velocity system is developed and the corresponding dynamical model of the control system is desired. The MATLAB/SIMULINK software package is used for system dynamics. This paper presents a preferable control strategy, so we can operate the machine more simple and convenient. To test the feasibility of the sensor-based power drill, a series of experiments was undertaken using a lot of materials with different structures. Experimental results show that the proposed drilling strategy is reliable and the bone extrusion of drill head can be maintained within 1mm.
