At present manual machining process for the hydraulic cylinder surface drilling and deburring is usually adopted but it exists the defects of low efficiency, unstable quality, high labor cost and it is easy to cause personal safety accident etc. Therefore it could not meet the needs of today’s market. This paper researches the automatic drilling machine according to the specific technical requirements for the hydraulic cylinder surface drilling and burr polishing process which could realize two processes in automatic synchronization, This machine ensure high quality and efficient process and at the same time to avoid the quality problems caused by human factors.Firstly, the function division of the whole equipment is formed according to the technical requirements and a preliminary for each part of the function is designed. The designs of the program will be combined to get three kinds of overall programs which are "single station processing that drilling mechanism moving", "single station processing that positioning mechanism moving " and "Three station processing ". Fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is used to evaluate each plans in accordance with the establishment of membership degree of evaluation criteria and finally it determines the "process of three locations" as the best program.Secondly, it divides the selected scheme into five sub-systems which are the automatic feeding system, material conveying system, positioning and clamping system, drilling system and burr cleaning system. Three dimensional digital design software is used to design and optimize the structure of each subsystem respectively. It selects appropriate drilling parameters, and then makes the parameter calculation and model selection on the key components, such as drilling motor, feeding servo motor, and cylinder. A unified system will be eventually formed by laying out each subsystem reasonably.Thirdly, the feasibility of the whole equipment is analyzed. It ensures the equipment on production cycle by the timing design and the control of movement time over main time-consuming body. It applies the movement policy technology to do movement interference detection of the whole equipment, in order to prevent the collision between parts when debugging. And it prevents resonance influence on the machining accuracy by introducing the numerical simulation technology to do modal analysis of whole equipment. Its feasibility is verified by designing the burring system, doing modal analysis on its key component, the long rod grinding head, and then doing the process simulation analysis. Eventually, the feasibility of the whole equipment is confirmed.Finally, the experimental study on automatic drilling machine is carried out. It establishes four evaluation index, including the working efficiency of drilling machine, the surface roughness on holes, the burring situations, and the drilling machine’s capability index. It reaches the technical requirements according to the real values of working efficiency and automatic drills surface roughness in the actual measurements and verifies the feasibility of the design according to the image acquisition of cylinder barrels after burring. Finally it testifies the automatic drill on the surface of hydraulic cylinder’s barrel to fulfill the capacity requirements of drilling process according to the calculation Cmk.
