| As the full transformation of the Chinese economy and society, as well as the enforcement of the revolution of the socialization of the university logistic services, universities and the cities are become closer. The outer fringe area of the university will work as the borderland between the university and the city environment. It integrates the university and the filed, space and the activities of the cities. The development of some old universities'outer fringe area, however, lags behind for some historical and realistic reasons. The special cultural features die out gradually. Therefore it is necessary to redesign and integrate the outer fringe area of those old universities. Now the question lays at how and by which way to integrate the outer fringe area, so as to solve the contradiction and the problem through the development of the outer fringe area of old universities.The main purposes of this essay it to bring in the Urban Catalyst theory, in order to search a new way of old campus outer fringe area integrating, using the relevant theories and research results as reference. It is hoped that by bringing in the Urban Catalyst theory, there will be a more scientific, reasonable way to encourage the healthy development of the old campus's outer fringe area. Also, I hope that this will also provide some ideas for constructing a new type of old campus outer fringe area which will show both university culture and city culture.The research of this essay has followed the question raising-question analysis-question solving pattern. It is begun with the economical and social background the old campus outer fringe area, and lay out the problems which those outer fringe area are facing during their development. Then it brings in the Urban Catalyst theory, stating that it is very important to the redesign and integrating of the outer fringe area. The catalyst characteristics of those outer fringe area developments have been analyzed, too. The main dynamic resources of the catalysis have been confirmed and the essence and the evolution features of the Urban Catalyst have been summarized.
