Italy is a beautiful peninsula country stretching into Mediterranean Sea. With a time-honored civilization, it is the centre of the ancient Roman Empire and the cradle of Renaissance and thus enjoys a credit as "the eldest son of the modern European culture". Apart from its world-famous religion, art and academic achievements, the incredibly abundant cultural historical legacies and urban landscapes in Italy are also eye-catching. By right of rich and various design methods, each city in Italy tends to create vivid and impressive urban landscapes on ordinary terrains. With their special charm, these old urban landscapes still attract lots of local residents and travelers from all over the world to this day. The scenes of people walking or resting in such diversified places in Italy are obviously rare in today's city life in China. China has a long history of civilization as brilliant as Italy. In the course of our rapid urbanization, however, our landscape structure is relatively disordered: natural resources in the cities are being eroded and destroyed; the traditional civilization resources are disappearing; blind culture transplants lead to malformation of urban space; unilateral understanding and simple imitation do serious harm to the harmony and liveliness of the urban landscapes. As a result, our urban space becomes even deserted. Therefore, it becomes quite necessary to discover, protect and rearrange the urban landscapes in present China. Based on the author's personal experience in Italy, collecting relevant documents and pictures, and consulting some experts and scholars to get acquainted with more information, the author takes some of the most representative urban landscapes in Italy as examples in this paper. Citing the different natural and civilization resources in these cities, the author applies comparison, analysis and inductive methods so as to study the space elements of Italian urban landscapes, and explore the goal, requisition and basic methods of the image shaping of these landscapes, aiming at being of some use of reference and consultation for the future development of our urban landscapes.
