Many achievements have made in the research and application of steel structural since almost one hundred years ago, and steel structural has been widely used in the residential building abroad for many years. But there is few research about infill works with frame as a lateral resistant member, and many problems remain to be solved in these aspects, and there are not correlative clauses about these in Steel Structures Design Code(GB50017—2003). Infill plays a important role in lateral resistance, so researching on the lateral resistant behavior of steel frame with inlaid panel infill possesses important theoretic and engineering value.ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate copolymer) is a kind of low density and environmental material. It could increase lateral resistant ability of frame while decrease the weight of the structure. In this paper,the tests of three steel frames with and without ASA panel infill under low-cycle loading are introduced. There are three aspects as below on the problems of this subject:1. Three full-scale steel frame specimens are tested on their behavior under low-cycle loading and ASA panel infill specimens are tested. The properties of ASA panel infill steel frame, such as hysteresis characteristics, stiffness, ducfility, failure mechanism and characteristic of dissipation of energy were gained in the test and compared with a ordinary steel frame and a ASA panel infill steel frame which have opened window and door.2. On the basis of the experimental research, create the model of ASA panel infill steel frame with the finite element analysis software ANSYS. Several factors which affect the experimental result are discussed; the simplified equation of section area of equivalent cross braced steel frame is presented based on the theoretical analysis and the accuracy of the equation is proved by the test results.3. The parameters of steel frame with infill which affect the lateral resistant ability, such as panel ratio, frame-to-panel connectors and frame-to-panel interface friction were discussed. It is emphasized that these parameters are very important for the engineering design to achieve the expected function and must be paid more attention.Some problems about this research worth to be studied afterward are put up in the end of the paper.
