| Advanced analysis is the mainstream tendency in steel structure analysis, and advanced design method based on advanced analysis could be the next steel main method in structure design. At the same time, the criteria in Appendix A of Code for Design of Steel Structure (GB50017-2003) still aims at traditional first order drift computation. In other words, regarding a definite structure system, under definite load condition, if we use the first order analysis method to calculate the structure drift, and the distortion has satisfied the request in the present code, we will find the structure drift with the distortion not necessarily satisfies the request in the present code, by changing another computational method, namely second-order analyses, because the result values by second-order method calculates will be bigger somewhat.The present standard Code for Design of Steel Structure (GB50017-2003) in China embodies second-order analysis first, but it doesn't introduce the drift limits in second-order elastic analysis.A different drift limits standard was given between one-order analyses and second-order analyses in the new Code for Design of towering Structure (GB50135-2006). In order to adapt the steel structure development direction, enable second-order analysis to have the useful value, the discussion on second-order drift limiting value not only is necessary, moreover is must.This paper also analysis the effection on the second-order drift by the Initial defects of material (the imaginative horizontal force) and the vertical loads. In certain formulas to calculate the second-order drift of plane steel frames change design value of a load to nominal value of a load, it can make the resulte more exact.Compared the one-order drift and the second-order drift in examples,then statisticed the result. This paper gives a second-order drift limit to a second-order total building drift limit and a inter-story drift limit to multi-stories steel frames.
