Reasonable traffic control methods are effective in alleviating traffic congestion, reducing emissions, energy consumption and travel delay. Plane intersections are the choke points of the urban traffic system. Research on intersection signal timing is of great significance.Going about the timing control and actuated control, the thesis solves the problems of traffic signal control at intersections. Timing signal control, the periods of which are invariable, is unable to regulate the parameters with changes of the traffic conditions. It leads to delay and resource-wasting; Actuated signal control is based on the detecting of coming vehicles, so it can't use the information of the intersections comprehensive. When timing control is used at the intersection which has less left-turn-traffic, it makes left turning cars effect heavily on going cars. The signals for pedestrians don't assort with the signals at the intersection that makes the car stop when it comes across the pedestrians. In this paper, some researches have been done, in the purpose to solve the problems described above.1. Introduces the principium of the traditional signal control methods and analyses the benefits and shortcomings of them.2. Presents a method for timing signal control, using clustering algorithm in Data mining. This method can choose signal control scheme according to the traffic condition which varies with time.3. A phase adaptive induction control method based on the length of the waiting queue is designed, and compared with the traditional method by simulation.4. Two methods have been designed to control the pedestrians going across a street. If the upstream intersection uses the timing control, signals for pedestrians must assort with it; while the upstream intersection uses induction control, signals for pedestrians can also use the induction control. The two methods are compared with the traditional timing control by simulation.
