Genetic Algorighm is a bionics algorighm about evolvement theory, which is concerned widely in the computer and optimization field in recent years. On the base of many literatures and investigation, the analysis of Genetic Algorighm and its application in the structure optimization design is studied in this paper. The basic conception and main characteristics about structure optimization design are presented. When the Genetic Algorighm is employed in the structure optimization design, the factors, e.g. mathematical modeling, dealing with constrain conditions, presences of initial varieties and options for control parameters, are generally investigated. In the system of light steel structures, portal steel frame has so many merits, such as fast construction, lower cost , smart continuation and single supplies responsibility that it are applied widely and dominant in the industrial architecture markets. Reasonable project will bring down the steel number and cost. The characteristics of portal steel frame is studied, and effective design varies and target functions are introduced as to different dimensions and layout of architecture in this paper. Some advices are provided according to the conclusion. The optimization design for portal steel frame with changing section is proceeding by utilizing Genetic Algorighm. When employed, Genetic Algorighm adopts two methods of coding(binary system and floating point numbers) and corresponding Genetic operators(option, intercross and aberrance operators). The results shows that the amount of steels can decline through the optimization design on the condition that all kinds of constrain can be satisfied. The optimization design has distinctive effects and great practical values, so it can be generalized widely.
