The portal frame building of light steel structure, have widely been used with less consumption of steel, and have obvious advantage on the period of the construction with comparison to the reinforced concrete structures. It is important for this metal building systems that construct lighter. This paper discusses the characteristics of the portal frame building constructer and studies optimization method to design them.The systematic analysis of the portal frames steel structural characteristics is done in section 2. And in section 3 and section 4, the structural optimization design is introduced based on the principles of finite element analysis (FEA) and the technology of Object Oriented Programming (OOP) in the software ANSYS. Based on the powerful ANSYS, some structural optimization design problems: effective design variables, optimization objective function (to reduce structural weight, give full play to materials performance targets) etc, was proposed. The APDL optimize programmed control documentation procedures in ANSYS for achieving portal frames structural optimization design.
