There are currently types of bridge pier protection systems for different cases, but the design codes and guildlines for these systems have not been well developed yet. In China ,the most popular one is the steel fender system, for which further reaserch is needed on large inelastic deflection in ship-bridge collision process. In this essay, a comparison of different protection systems is made, the basic and deprived structures of steel fender are studied with numerical simulations. The main contents are as follows:(1) A review of the service condition and applicative occasion of bridge pier protective system in the world is made;(2)A common phenomenon is discovered with numerical simulations of the process for steel fenders subjected to ship impact in engineering cases. Further discussion is carried out by building a idealized model, and then several possible reasons are given.(3) Efficiency of rubber fender in Floating entry- dissipation protection system is studied with a idealized model, and crashworthiness between large size rubber fender and small size rubber fender are compared. Further research of Influence of the fender number and rubber rigidity on buffering and energy absorption of rubber fender is made, and the conclusion is verified with the case of zhongxian changjiang bridge.(4)A steel rope-flexible protection system is designed for the cap of a single tower cable-stayed bridge according to experiences. Sensitivities of relevant parameters (such as stiffness of inner box and outer box, number of steel rope absorber) which have influence on the crashworthiness of protection system are discussed, and optimal design is set up for the steel rope-flexible protection system of zhanjiang bay bridge based on the former conclusion.
