The Bund area is the most important urban space in modern Shanghai. While tothe east of Middle Henan Road(originally Boundary Street), locates the earliestEnglish Settlement, which became the Central District of International Settlementafterward. The No. 255 Middle Jiangxi Road Building is one of those buildings builtin the beginning of the 20th century and survives in the urbanization of the 'Golden1930s' in Shanghai.Came with red brick, steep roof and curly pedimented gables, the No. 255 MiddleJiangxi Road Building is a kind of architectural cocktail, with a little colonial remains, a little classical principles, a little Baroque and a little Queen Anne. It combines allthese elements and a number of others into a mixture that had a strong character of itsera. However, we still know little about its history and character.The thesis consists of 4 chapters. Chapter 1 contains historical research of thisbuilding—background of erection, designer and construction period as well as changeof function in its long history of use. Chapter 2 focus on the definition of architecturalstyle, under the background of contemporary British architectural development.Chapter 3 discuss the cultural identity of this building, analysis cultural meaningbehind each elements—verandah, red brick and eclectic facade. Chapter 4 is thedescription of situation, and some conservation and renovation suggestion accordingto its main problems. A conclusion is presented in the last part, demonstrating thehistorical as well as architectural values of the No. 255 Middle Jiangxi Road Building.
