Study On Asphalt Pavement Failures And Maintenance Methods Of Jing-Qin Expressway

With the miles increasing of the expressway in China, the expressway has become a kind of important infrastructue in social economic field. After the completion and opening to the traffic, the asphalt pavement surface of the expressway will appear various early breakage in different degrees due to the traffic loading and natural factors. In an overview, the asphalt pavement failures of expressway mainly emerge as potholes, loosing, cracking, squirting, settlement, fatting-up, rutting, net cracking, spliting, and etc. In this paper, combined with the physical work of Jing-Qin Expressway which was completed and opened to traffic in September, 1999, the asphalt pavement failures of expressway and the maintenance methods are studied. The failures on Jing-Qin Expressway are mainly cracking and water damages, which presented as potholes, loosing, cracks, squirting, settlement, and etc.Cracking is one kind of the early failures on Jing-Qin Expressway. There are various kinds of cracks, which mainly appear as irregular longitudinal cracks, lateral cracks, net-type cracks, spliting, and etc. The cracks mainly resulted from the affects of the asphalt quality, the asphalt mixture quality, the material quality of the base course, the weather condition, the changing of traffic volume, the variation of the vehicle type , the constrction quality, and etc. The paper discussed the mechanism of generating and development of the cracks, and introduced the repairing methods and the meassures taken during design, construction, and maintenance period to avoid the cracks generating on Jing-Qin Expressway for recent years. Water damage is the main disease of the pavement on Jing-Qin Expressway, which mechanism of generating and the course of development are studied in the aspects of design, construction, and materail using by ways of coring sample and indoor testing. On the basis of studying on the maintenance meassures for various failures on Jing-Qin Expressway, this paper mainly introduced the repairing ways for potholes, loosing and rough surface, presented diverse improvement methods corresponding to different causes, breifly put forward the preventive maintenance measures using new technics, new materials and new arts, and made the result evaluation and the benefit analysis.Carrying out the study on the failures of expressway asphalt pavement and the maintenance method, analysing the mechanism and the generating causes of the failures, taking effective meassures to avoid the diseases, or establishing the advanced scheme, and adopting the feasible ways, all these are very significative for raising the scientific level in maintenance work and reducing the expressway maintenance cost. In the paper, combined with the physical work of Jing-Qin Expressway, the failures of the asphalt pavement and the maintenance meassures are studied, which is valuable for reference to similar works on failure treatment, performance evaluation and economic analysis, etc.
