The Study On Vernacular Landscape

Vernacular landscape, embodying human's adaptation to natural environments, has come into being when people were during the long-term process of everyday living and production. Vernacular landscape stems from local people's living experiences, studying vernacular landscape will witness and record its development process. In the last several years, the rapid growth of urbanity has brought unprecedented impact to vernacular landscapes. And, population growth, environment pollution, changes of living styles, and loss of cultural tradition and folk customs, also destroyed vernacular communities, vernacular sceneries, and cultural landscapes. Protecting the integrity and characteristics of vernacular landscapes, excavating its values, is one of the important tasks of protecting traditional landscape sceneries, carrying forward folk customs culture, maintaining environmental ecology, and developing the innovation of landscape design. In order to make our landscape design full of sense of human kindness, close to real life, full of sentiment, belonging to the land where it rooted in, we should properly understand and grasp the essence of vernacular landscapes.This article started from generating the definition of vernacular landscapes, excavating its general content, then proceeded with the study of south of Yangtze River, summarized the characteristics of vernacular landscapes in that area. And, based on the foregoing study, feasible solutions to develop vernacular landscapes were explored. The vernacular planning of Xia Zhu Lake Wetland Scenic Resort, as a case study, was further analyzed and elaborated.
