As the development trend of traffic transport system in 21 st century, intelligent traffic system (ITS) is attached much importance in the world. The research of signal control of the single intersection, which is the basis of the ITS in cities, seems to be essential to solve the traffic crowds.The research emphasizes on signal control of the single cross-shaped intersection and pan-boolean algebra in order to broaden the application range of pan-boolean algebra.What has been put forward in the research is that deciding the signal timings according to the traffic flows waiting for green light, and establishing the pan-boolean algebra model of the traffic signal control, which has the ability to decide the sequence and time of signal control in each traffic phase based on the number of vehicles waiting for green light in real time. Furthermore, the logic circuit design and pan-boolean algebra has been discussed together, and CPLD tools are used in the research to design and simulate the control system.To sum up, the primary work that we discussed in this thesis includes:1. The timing model of the traffic signal control in the single intersection. The signal control and timing configuration are set up by measuring the number of the vehicles waiting for the go-ahead.2. The pan-boolean algebra logic model of the traffic signal control in the single intersection. The logic statement, symbol expression and pan-boolean function are put forward based on the logic of traffic signal control.3. Real-time adaptive control of the traffic lights in the single intersection. The design of this control system is realized by using the VHDL and a CPLD tool to describe and simulate the system function.The further development of this research could emphasize on the timing model and control method, or the pan-boolean algebra model of the traffic signal control in other intersections and regional traffic nets.
