Internet growth in recent times has been very impressive .As the amount of data being carried on IP networks grows; managing network resources to ensure reliable and acceptable performance becomes increasingly important. Multiprotocol Label Switching Protocol (MPLS) is the solution to the problem. One of the techniques that are being used by many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to achieve this goal is Traffic Engineering. Traffic engineering refers to the optimization of operational networks. The idea is to use existing resources most effectively, which is complementary to dimensioning, where one adds resources to meet the requirements for serving customers properly. In this thesis a new routing algorithm, named K-Algorithm is proposed. One of the specificities of the K-Algorithm is that, unlike certain algorithms like DORA (Dynamic Online Routing Algorithm) computes all the possible paths between source and destination by expanding the well known shortest path First Algorithm. Also the concept of critical links is taken into account in this algorithm. Its implementation in OPNET shows that it performs better, in terms of throughputs than the DORA algorithm.
