HID (High-Intensity-Discharge) lamps are widely applied in residential as well as commercial lighting applications due to its impressive performance such as high luminous efficacy, long life, color rendering. Because of HID lamp's negative incremental impedance characteristics, ballast is needed to employ to limit lamp's current. To improve the efficiency and power density of ballasts used for HID lamp, ballast's working frequency has been gradually improved. However, when HID lamps operate in high frequency, some especial phenomena such as acoustic resonance will occur. So, it is necessary to design an experiment and observation platform for studying the HID lamp and the ballast.The investigation of the thesis is focused on design the electrical testing platform for 1000W HID lamp. The main contributions are as the followings: (1)Base on deeply investigating HID lamp's operating principle using gas discharge theory, a suit of control strategy has been brought forward. (2) 1000W high-frequency electronic ballast for HID lamp is finished and detail designing process has been described. (3) In order to facilitate the observation, electrical parameters measurement and arc imaging devices have been designed.Experiment results have been proved that the 1KW ballast and observation devices have the superiority performance, and design method is with good reference value for analysis and design of high-power high-frequency electronic ballast. The electrical parameters measurement devices have the favorable characteristics such as wide transmission bands, high sampling precision, fast sampling speed, and good performance of electrical isolation. The arc imaging equipment used infrared imaging technology can be easy and convenient to observe and record the arc under HID lamp running state.The experiment and observation platform for high-power ballast of HID lamp designed in this project has been verified that it has good electric characteristic, and it can offer good service for analyzing the HID lamp characteristic, as well as effectively help to design high-frequency ballast for HID lamp.
