China is now being from agricultural society to industrial society and, in the meantime, to post-industrial society which leads to a profound social structure transition. It is the background and basis of the research of historical district conservation and renewal. On one hand, the historical districts become the symbol of culture and history of the city; on the other hand, traditional townscapes disappear rapidly in large-scale urban development. In historical district, there are not only the plentiful heritage which need to be conserved, but also the poor people and the run-down utilities which need to be renewed. This paper tries to analyse above issues objectively, and study the historical district conservation and renewal based on stratification methods. First , it concludes the rule of space changes and the problems from history and reality. Then, it points out the essences of historical district conservation and renewal. So, we should solve the problems in different ways which include use of the revitalization strategy in the city level, and hire some design skills to continue the special context in the distict level. Finally, the paper concludes the concrete means of revitalization , and the process and pattern of stratification through analysing three examples on conservation and renewal in Hangzhou .
