The woodwork system of Chinese Traditional Architecture consists of framework and joinery work. Framework refers to the structure of beams, columns and frames. Joinery work focuses on detailed divisions of architectural space, which endows buildings with various characters and identities and makes buildings functional. The research of the joinery work of traditional architecture has remained silent for the past years. The joinery work of traditional architecture in South Jiangsu and South Zhejiang being as the research object, plenty of source materials were obtained by direct communication with traditional joinery artisans and on-site observation of manufacturing techniques and processes as well as by studying two representative joinery examples in these two areas. Based on source materials and reference to historical documents, this thesis systemically discusses on the joinery work of traditional architecture in these two areas in its form , criterion, technique, craftwork, etiquette and artistic style. Then, the construction techniques and design concepts of traditional architecture joinery in these two regions is resulted from the horizontal comparison and study.The thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter generally describes the construction base of joinery work in these two regions, including Traditional Joinery Artisan, Construction Ruler, Tool, Design, Heritage of Traditional Techniques. Chapter Two to Chapter Five respectively discusses design concept and manufacturing techniques of Door & Window, Embelished Ceiling & Ceiling, inside and outside Separation, shrine . The sixth chapter is Summary, which analyzes the historical and cultural backgrounds and status quo of traditional joinery in South Jiangsu and South Zhejiang.The whole-length of paper contains approximately 76,000 Chinese characters, and 240 illustrations among them.
