The window is one of the most creative elements in building design. Its multiplicity has direct influence upon the exterior form and interior space of a building. The window and relationship between windows and buildings are discussed in this thesis ,from whole to parts and again to whole .First, the basic cognition to window is explained. Beginning with linguistics meaning, the window's origin and different history in Occident and China are represented, and different styles are compared in several classifying ways.Then in Chapter 2, the window is separated into hole, barrier and member, such three status, together with the research of design request."Hole"is the original status of the window, which brings fresh air, light and landscape into interior space."Barrier"means that the window is still a part of walls. And"member"shows that the window has its own space and parts.In Chapter 3, window is sent back to buildings. The relationship between window and building in structure, space and scale is analysed; several design methods are summarized; and the influence out of architecture is also mentioned.The last Chapter introduces four building examples. That Window Design is a very important part of Building Design is explained more concretly.
