With the diversification, complication and individuation of the requirements for products, the methods and techniques for fast design of the products, aiming to reduce the product develop period, have been paid more and more attentions. By combining the advantages of modular design and parameterized design, Parameterized Modular Design has become the effective method for realizing the fast design of products. With the small frame in bridge crane as an object, this paper researched the theory and methods of Parameterized Modular Design used in the fast design of small frame. The main points of the paper are described as follows.(1) The existing modular design methods were analyzed and comparied and three modular design methods for products development were presented, i.e., new product modular design, existed product modularized redesign and modularized reform for existed product families.(2)The design processes of these three methods were summarized and the modular design process of the small frame was introduced in detail.(3)The concept of Parameterized Modular Design was presented based on the combination of the advantages of the modular design with the advantages of parameterized design and feature technique. The goals, tools and methods were introduced for the development of parameterized modular design platform for the small frame in the bridge crane.(4) The design of the small frame in the bridge crane was carried out under the support of the developed system. The using process was introduced and the effectiveness of the platform was provedThe concept of parameterized modular design presented in this paper combined the advantages of module-dividing and module-combining in modular design with the advantages of flexibility to dimension changing in parameterized design, which leads to the dimensional flexibility of the modules according to the users'requirements. The platform developed for the design of the small frame in the bridge crane can quickly generate the products design scheme according to the users input information, which would provide a helpful tool to response the users'requirements and to reduce work load of product design. The adaptability and the flexibility of the system have be proved in the practice.
