Thermal generation is the main generation mode of Jiangsu grid. The generation capacity of the whole province dispatched by the dispatching and communication center will exceed 42,000 MW at the end of 2007, but there's only one hydropower plant brought into service, namely Shahe pumped-storage hydroelectric station with 2 generators of 50 MW. As the generation capacity of hydroelectric generators is comparatively small, system operating staffs are not so familiar with the operating characteristics of pumped-storage hydroelectric generators. The paper attempts to discuss the operating characteristics of pumped-storage hydroelectric generators preliminarily. On the basis of completing modeling pumped-storage hydroelectric generators in PSASP and PSS/E programs, two aspects were taken into consideration in the simulation of operating characteristics of pumped-storage hydroelectric generators, namely voltage regulation of pumped-storage hydroelectric generators and the operating characteristics of pump work conditions.Tongguanshan pumped-storage hydroelectric station is located in the southmost part of Jiangsu Grid, which is the receiving system and whose regional voltage is comparatively low. And furthermore, the pumped-storage hydroelectric station is near Zhengping DC substation, so its performance of dynamic reactive power becomes one of the most important contents needed research. The paper did elementary analysis on voltage regulation capacity, and calculated QV curves and transient voltage responses combined with voltage stability theories. The results show that the commissioning of pumped-storage hydroelectric station can improve the static and transient voltage stability of Yixing area effectively.Regarding the operating characteristic analysis of pumped-storage hydroelectric under pump work conditions, the paper provides a specific fault case. In this case, simulation accuracy and credibility were validated through extraction of field fault recording data, playback of the data and compare of the simulation results and field measured data. On the basis of that, some potential faults were simulated and results were given. The meaning of the work consists in its validating the simulation reliability through comparing field measured data with simulation results, promoting the subsequent analysis of calculation results and judging the accuracy and credibility of simulation results.
