As a kind of special power plant with such functions as peaking load regulation, frequency regulation, condenser operation, emergency reserve etc., pumped-storage plants play an important role in safe and economical operation of the power system. Many pumped-storage plants have being planned and built in China recently. It is important signification to carry on the research on operation simulation of pumped-storage plant, and to evaluate quantitatively the functions and benefits in aspect of development healthily of pumped-storage plants and optimization of power source structure. This paper introduces the development of the research on operation simulation for pumped-storage plant at home and abroad currently. According to the developmental trend of pumped-stroage plant in China, the operation simulation model with objective function of the minimum operating cost of the power syetem for pumped-storage plant is proposed based on the timesequencing weekly load curve. The multi-constraints include reservoir constraint are considered in the model. It can be used for analysising and calculating the daily pumping mode and generating mode of the pumped-storage, also simulating the working position, energy produciton, needed reservoir capacity and system operating cost etc of the pumped-storage. Moreover a method for designing and calculating the reservoir of pumped-storage is proposed. A new improved dynamic programming algorithm is used to solve unit commitment of the system operation simulation, it can make the result of operation simulation more niceties. The corresponding software is compiled by the MATLAB language, it is universal and simple to perform, at the same time it has clear appearance and powerful function, so it is a good tool for operation simulation of pumped-stroage plant and power system. Based on the simulation software, the problem of building pumped-storage plant of weekly regulation mode in Fujian power system is discussed. The studies of the working position, working capacity, utilization hours of generation and needed reservoir capacity of pumped-storage plant are carry out in detail. The system operating cost, benefit of saving coal and investment cost of pumped-storage plant of daily or weekly regulation mode as well as other peaking stations is compared. The results show that, the pumped-storage plant has enough work position in load curve in Fujian power system, furthermore pumped-storage plant of weekly regulation mode is better in economical efficiency than pumped-storage plant of daily regulation mode or other peaking sources. Building a certain capacity of pumped-storage plant, which is an economical and effective peaking power source, is in favor of optimizing and adjusting Fujian electric structure.The results are accepted by the parties concerned, it will have the reference value to the planning and argumentation of building pumped-storage plant in Fujian in a certain extent. In addition, the suggestion about next work is also proposed in the paper.
