According to the spatial design in modern environment principle, the application of the dooryard is seasoned with such characteristics as region, environment, climate etc. As far as functions are concerned, dooryard can bring catchment, aeration, lighting, fire fighting and beautification, which is a best means of accommodating nature and putting sustainable development of structures in practice. For the moment, China is placed in a high speed stage of urbanization, the uptrend of level postpones was gradually broken by perpendicular high buildings. The population of China increases continuously with the housing of each big and medium-sized city has become a problem that need the solution urgently. Those used to bring mankind a lot of fun now has been an extravagant way of living just because dooryard occupies city space with resources while providing fun for people. Facing such situations, whether we can make it survive or not in the premise of keeping high density which makes dooryard residence a kind of possible living seems to be a serious problem.The aim of this essay is to explore and abstract traditional dooryard space in the means of philosophy, sociology and culture, in order to take positive effect on modern residence architecture. This essay starts with introducing the concept of dooryard and telling the difference between dooryard and courtyard. After explaining the dooryards in Su Zhou, Hui Zhou, Si Chuan and Jiang Xi, this essay summarizes the status of dooryard in traditional Chinese culture, which can be summed up in culture background and corresponding philosophy, aesthetics, bionomics fields. Finally after analysing modern technology conditions, this essay brings forward the feasibility of dooryards in modern society, such as improving interior lighting and micro-climate of buildings with the help of dooryards.
