Chinese scholar-bureaucrat gardens, used for recreation and touring, are built by ancient Chinese groups who like literature and work in bureaucracy. As the representative of Chinese classic gardens, scholar-bureaucrat gardens represent the fundamental character of aesthetic culture of Chinese classic gardens, and embody aesthetic demanding of Chinese style. In this thesis, the analyses of scholar-bureaucrat gardens, will be helpful for us to understand the aesthetic interest of Chinese classic gardens and Chinese classic aesthetics. Then, the thesis focuses on the questions that, which factor influenced on the aesthetic character of scholar-bureaucrat gardens and how the character changed. This thesis sets the development of scholar-bureaucrat gardens into the deep-seated context of Chinese classic philosophy and aesthetics, and attempts to explain some personal opinions on aesthetic character of scholar-bureaucrat gardens from the aesthetic angle, by comparison and combining history with logic.This thesis can be divided into five sections:Sectionâ… Introduction: It gives the definition of Chinese scholar-bureaucrat garden. Meanwhile, the research significance, the contemporary research condition and the method are illustrated.Sectionâ…¡Natural forming of verve & magic creation of nature: Taoist aesthetics, metaphysics and Zen thinking have cultivated the thinking origin of scholar-bureaucrat gardens' natural beauty. During the long process of developing, the scholar-bureaucrat gardens' pursuing of natural beauty has undergone three stages as follows: imitating natural beauty, expressing emotion of natural beauty, and emphasizing on the free expression and enjoying natural beauty. Along with the development of scholar-bureaucrat gardens, they express an inclination of creating nature as well as exceeding nature, looking like nature but far from nature.Sectionâ…¢Compatibility of painting and poem & lots of cultural meanings: Chinese scholar-bureaucrat gardens, which melt poem, painting and calligraphy in themselves, not only have natural beauty, but also humanistic beauty. For one thing, Chinese traditional art itself has the potential of combination. For another, it is necessary consequences for scholar-bureaucrat who pursues elegance. So we can say that, the whole developing process of Chinese scholar-bureaucrat gardens is meanwhile the course of infiltration of humanistic factors and culture senses.Sectionâ…£Using the scenery to enjoy yourself: Except being molded the scenery alike nature for appreciating, Chinese scholar-bureaucrat gardens are also created the conditions to satisfy scholar-bureaucrat's enjoyment of artistic interests and living beauty. Chinese scholar-bureaucrat gardens have lots of aesthetic functions, because they are not only the dwelling of scholar-bureaucrat, but also the practical ground to realize privacy and be comfortable. The development of these functions experienced a course from external to internal, from simple amusement of sense organ to appreciation and comfort of mind. This change suits for the particular plight and demanding of scholar-bureaucrat of different periods.
