City is always a topic. Recently, the optimum population of the city became a hot one, because the city's growth during urbanization brings a lot of problem. The study before focused on the economically proper population and the environmentally proper population. This paper proposes the concept of Proper Space Mode, based on our country's land recourse and the target to build Compact City. The core of the concept is about spatial proper population.Combined qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis, it gives the definition of Proper Space Mode, and demarcates space mode into Compact Space Mode and Loosening Space Mode. Meanwhile, This paper provides three other concepts to demarcate space mode. They are perfect pure population density, cautionary pure population density, and loosening pure population density. There are three main conclusions:1. Proper Space Mode is economical, saves recourses, such as land etc . Also it has efficient traffic system, comfortable for people to live. It applies to the city's culture and history, not a settled form.2. A normal city's perfect pure population density is 10000 per 1km~2, cautionary pure population density is 16667 per 1km~2, and loosening population pure density is 1953 per 1km~2.3. Population density, road area per person, resident land plot ratio are three standards to test if a city's space mode is proper or not. According to these standards, the six parts of Hangzhou's optimum population is 4770,000.Hope this paper can add something new to optimum population theory, and lead other study on spatial proper population. Last, it gives some suggests to the Hangzhou's population scale and introduction.
