Developing a test bench for evaluating motor drive performance of Electric Vehicle (EV) is one of important tasks of researching on motor and its drive system of XL Electric Vehicle, which is one of the nation's 863 projects. The development of the test bench includes hardware and software design.The test bench for evaluating motor drive performance is different from traditional motor test bench. The characteristics of motor drive system have to be considered as well as drive conditions of EV. Accordingly, power and torque measurement tools in the hardware design must satisfy requirements of not only steady performance tests but also dynamic performance tests. For the software, factors of dynamic performance such as dynamometer inertia have to be taken into account.In the first place, this paper outlines the general configuration of the test bench, which consists of dynamometer system, motor drive system under test and computer control and acquisition system. Then the concise discussions concentrate on the measurement principle of Drive System of EV as well as measurement obstacles and solutions. In addition, by means of ADVISOR simulation, this paper provides steady state test methods over a wide range speed and torque, and dynamic state tests that comprise system efficiency tests based on drive cycles, battery charging and discharging efficiency tests and dynamic performance tests. According to these, hardware design is fulfilled. At last, this paper describes the nuts and bolts of specific software programming for the test bench. This software integrates functions of measurement, analysis, control, display, drive cycle set and parameters set.This test bench can simulate loads on motor shaft when EV is driving on the road and reproduce the process of starting, speed varying and braking. It can also simulate driving conditions like on-road tests and it is much more ideal tool for motor drive performance tests. The technology level involved in this test bench has reached an advanced level in the field of EV motor test in China.
