Analyzing Gardens Of Ming & Qing Dynasties From Painting

"Poetic and Artistic Flavor" has been a remarkable characteristic of traditional Chinese gardens, and it even has become the standard of weighing the qualified gardens since Song Dynasty. Besides, its successful role of guiding Chinese gardens proves that it is desirable to study gardens from painting; furthermore, it can strengthen the cultural characteristics of Chinese gardens.Starting from the point of inheritance, development and innovation, this paper analyzes and generalizes the congruousness between ancient Chinese gardens and painting on the sectors as historical background, building aim and builders' identity, and then confirms the close link between the two and the deep influence of painting on ancient Chinese gardens. Then it explicates the performance of artistic flavor in Ming & Qing Dynasties for further obtaining the methods of achieving artistic flavor in ancient Chinese gardens by comparing painting and gardens' building as well as motif-setting, general layout, composing elements surrounding the construction theme in gardens' building. Influenced by economic globalization, national and regional differences are shrinking and local cultures are missing. As to ancient Chinese gardens, the traditional characteristic artistic flavor and symbolic connotation are descending because of the routinely imitation. Hereby the paper put forward reintroducing theory of painting into design of contemporary gardens, and continually notes that painting has broad application prospects in modern gardens. It points out that the pursuit of Artistic Flavor is not only the most attractive charm of Ancient Chinese gardens, but also the quintessence which modern gardens must inherit. Finally, it summed up an inherit point of tradition artistic flavor creation method and a expand point of modern painting development to modern gardens designs by analyzing the development trend of modern gardens design and modern painting. It is believable that Chinese gardens should be enriched and developed either in visual form or in cultural connotation by incorporating artistic flavor.In line with the cultural inheriting objective, it is hoped that this paper would provide a feasible research direction for studying modern gardens in China.
