As human civilization rapidly progresses, the conflict between human's expectation of improving living conditions and the bad shortage of energy is becoming inevitably more and more serious, so energy saving is significantly important in architecture designing. In Chongqing, a western sloping city in China, energy saving in dwelling buildings is in progress. However, the already existed energy-saving methods are not widely accepted by the public and difficult to popularize. Therefore it is quite meaningful to seek for new ways to save energy in the designing of residential districts.This thesis intends to find out some feasible methods to save energy in the designing of residential districts for the purpose of resolving the practical problems appeared in Chongqing region. On the basis of studying numerous relevant materials of home and abroad and carrying out a lot of on-the-spot investigations, this thesis incorporates the experience of some former veteran scholars and tries to find out an effective way to save energy in the designing of residential districts. Finally it intends to achieve the goals of reducing economic investment and increasing energy efficiency.This thesis is mainly divided into five parts.The first part focuses on the necessity of saving energy and the already existed principal energy-saving methods in the designing of residential districts in Chongqing. It also probes the problems caused by the abuse of high-efficiency pyrology materials and proposes a new way which mainly relies on the designing to save energy. The second part explores some basic problems in energy saving in the designing of residential districts in Chongqing. It points out that under the influence of regional climate, the contents of energy saving in residential districts designing should include the establishment of systematic climate-adapting strategies and the complement of high-efficiency pyrology materials, thus to increase economically and effectively the adaptation of the residential districts to regional climate for the satisfaction of the thermal comfort.The third part investigates the methods of arranging the site for the purpose of saving energy. It specifically analyzes the arrangement of the site in a sloping and river-near region.The forth part discusses the energy-saving designing in a single dwelling building from the aspects of the building's volume, shape, space and indoor thermal comfort.
