As one of pearls in Chinese civilization treasury, the classic gardens, with its own unique characteristics, centuries-old histories as well as the broad distributions, is always the main traveling and leisure site. The culture related with the classic gardens, therefore, makes a critical component of the traveling culture in China, and the research of it becomes pretty important. However, most of current research of classic gardens culture are limited to specific scenery features of the gardens itself, lacking of the macro-view of relationship between the gardens and the municipal culture. This paper, after analyzing the impact of municipal culture on the classic gardens, reaches important conclusion: The municipal culture definitely plays a key-role in shaping ths classic gardens. On ths one hand, the degree to which the municipal culture impacts on the classic gardens determines the formation, development and the cultural characteristies of classic gardens. On the other hand, the classic gardens, clearly exhibiting the underlying municipal culture backgrounds and traits, becomes the best representation of the municipal culture.Taking Chengdu and Yangzhou as the examples, the authors study the processes of municipal cultural development in these two cities by focusing on their ups and downs, as well as their differences.
