This paper was funded by the subject—the construction of the digital canal system platform and the management decision of precision irrigation application(2003AA209040). The subject belongs to the Project 863: The study and application of Precision produce platform technology for digital agriculture. In most irrigation district,the means of data information trasnfer is scattered and backward. Althought new sensors and advanced transfering tools are used in few irrigation district,it is difficult to gain ground because of their high price. In this paper, a practicable means of data transmission is shown,which is based on GPRS, GPS, embedded PC and Internet technology for irrigation district.In the paper,two points are considered.One is need of irrigation district deploitation.The other is that GPRS is widely used in domestic wireless communication. Under the consideration, the development of a portable Data transmission device based on GPRS for Irrigation District utilizing embedded PC and GPRS module was put forward. The device was designed to transmit data from GPS and observations of other instrument to FTP server on internet by wireless GPRS. It applied a client/server mode and its core part was an embedded PC module.The digital canal system platform connecting to Internet can read various dynamic data of canal system in real time. This paper covered following topics: the outline of GPRS and GPS, setting up development environment for system, design of the system,selection of hardwares,development of software,testing of the device,etc.The main works include:(1) Selection of embedded PC,GPRS,GPS modules and other peripheral equipments.(2) Interface unit or circuitry selecting and assembly, writing device driver, keyboard definition and display program.(3) Development of application program: considering the practices of the irrigation district, data inputting interface program, GPS data reading and displaying program, GPRS transmitting program and receiver program of digital platform were written.(4) Integrating hardware and software, making a prototype of the device.(5) Running and testing the prototype in practice, proved it's feasibility.It was proved that the device can realize long-distance data transmission of irrigation...
