With the road traffic volumes increasing, the truck axle weight becomes heavier and the traffic requires trenching. There appears a high demand for raising the quality of the asphalt pavement as the main type of highway pavement. The traditional general asphalt mixture is not able to meet the demand perfectly. It makes the development of modified asphalt or asphalt mixture which are modified by filling the additive. One of the important problems facing the highway researchers is how to make better use of the performance of the modified asphalt and to improve the investment benefit.According to the research at home and abroad, the diatomite was added to the asphalt concrete as the modifier, and type AC-13C and AC-20C dense-graded aggregate was adopted. Eight types of asphalt concretes are made, which are the general asphalt concrete, SBS modified asphalt concrete, the general asphalt concrete added with diatomite and SBS modified asphalt concrete added with diatomite. The stability under high temperature, the anti-crack ability under low temperature and the water resistance are tested for the eight types of asphalt concretes in lab. The parameter of the Marshall stability of asphalt concrete, the dynamic stability in rut test of asphalt concrete, the Marshall stability of impregnated asphalt concrete, the freeze-thaw split strength, the stiff modulus under low temperature and the low temperature creep rate are researched by comparatively testing. The pavement performance index of various types of asphalt concrete is comprehensively researched by testing. The effect (?)(?)es of diatomite on the pavement performance are founded out. The mechanism of asphalt concrete modified by diatomite is analyzed theoretically.Based on the result of the experiment and analysis, some research on diatomite at home and abroad, and the present condition of asphalt pavement in Jiangsu province , some conclusions are drawn out by author , which will provide reference on the researching, extension and application of the diatomite modified asphalt pavement in Jiangsu province .
