The area of Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces along the Yellow River is one of the most important cradlelands of Chinese civilization. With time passed on, a plenty of cities which were built for the purpose of defence appeared in this area, and some of them have been remained. Many historic buildings studing in these cities along the Yellow River are still preserved in good condition. In the old time, because these historic cities played an important role of national defence, most of these historic buildings were defensive buildings besides their basic functions. These buildings were built in the places where the landform was steep and convenient. This made them become landscape architecture which based on the purpose of national defence. So the designers thought a lot about the selected location, layout, building designs and made them work for the different fuctions. On the other hand, the historic buildings that belonged to the same historic city worked together and built a landscape architecture system of the city., which emphasized the bond between the city and the natural environment. This reflects one theory of Chinese city planning in the old time, that architecture, city planning and landscape were highly integrated and developed hands in hands. And the theories about selected location, layout, building designs of these historic buildings are good for the designs of modem buildings. This thesis studies on the historical documents, historical charts, mapping and researching achievements, sorts out and summarizes the design theories of the historic buildings in Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces along the Yellow River, lays a foundation for them to be developed in the future.
