Currently, with the rapid development of our country city scale and constantly increasing highrise buildings, the conflict with analysis of sunlight and urban planning has become more and more radical. In the mean time, with the continual elevation of national economic level and life standard of citizens, the architecture and urban planning pays more and more attention to analysis of sunlight. In recent time, almost every building project in every part of country was commanded to execute analysis of sunlight.As one of the key scientific projects of the National 863 Scheme in 2004 and one of the key scientific projects of the Construction Ministry in 2005, a software for analysis of sunlight has been developed based on 3D graph platform by institute of engineering software of the China academy of building research, which accords with the request of code, operates conveniently and has reasonable and credible results. Using genetic algorithm to calculate the maximum permissible size of planned buildings with sunlight design code is studied in this thesis. This problem can be come down to combinatorial optimization problem. This thesis commences with the detailed introduction of the basic principle of analysis of sunlight and genetic algorithm. What follows is the way of these two elements combining together for this problem. Then, the methods of coding and decoding, creating initial population, the design of evaluation function, every genetic operations and fixing the value for genetic parameters are explained. In addition, many ways to optimize the performance of genetic algorithm are adopted in this project, and they all obtain good effects. Brief programming frame is provided in each part. At the end of thesis, there is an example of analysis of sunlight, which proving that this algorithm has excellent performance in application to this problem.The project aims at realizing the function in software for analysis of sunlight: calculation the maximum permissible size of planned buildings, at the same time, according to sunlight design code, there are enough time of effective sunlight over all existing windows. This function is an important aid in planning design and designing the land-saving building.
