With the development of our society, the market puts forward more and more demands for mechanical product: it calls for the product more varieties and fewer quantities, the product's performance must be complete and it must have high efficiency and high quality. As a kind of effective design methodology which can benefit the whole manufacturing industry, modular design is a key technology of Rapid Design(RD) and Mass Customization(MC),and it is becoming more and more important for the society.This paper analyzed the current state and development tendency of the modular design, and did many researches on methods and technology of the modular design. And it applied the idea of modular design to the grinding machine of bearing ring. Then this paper developed a novel modularity evaluation approach of the product's layout based on the above analysis. The approach evaluates the product's modularity according to the eight factors: coupling degree among different modules, aggregation degree inside one module, interchangeability of the modules, reusability, expansibility , dependability and at last synthetically analyzed the result of evaluations.To meet the variety demands of our client, this thesis takes a systemic research of modular design to fit for the modern pattern of the product development, and these theories are proved by an example of modular design on grinding machine of bearing ring. This work is good for the development and the application of modular design.
