Research On Paper Architecture

To China, until nowadays, modern architecture ideology is completely an exotic. We accepted the learning fruit of western architecture theory rapidly and directly. So, in order to build indigenous modern architecture theory, it is a very important precondition to review the origin and the development of the modern architecture ideology from advanced countries.It has been a long time since the term "Paper Architecture" appeared in western architecture critique. But in China, it has never been put in the research view to understand the indeed meaning and significance of the term. Considering the situation of China, this thesis is to make a survey of the "blank" sketchily and to promote constructive or argumentative point of view for further discussing and thinking.For it's not likely to get a precise definition from reference books, former papers or the word itself, the first chapter "Meaning" explains the connotation and denotation of paper architecture by analyzing "paper" and "architecture". Through this, to confine the object, answer the question "WHAT", and then discuss the distinctive feature of paper architecture. The second chapter "Factor" analyzes the causation of "unbuilt" through a series of cases, answers the question "WHY". The third chapter "Representation" sums up various fields paper architecture relates to and different layers it touches on by giving a great deal of examples, answers the question "HOW". Thus, the thesis finishes the description of paper architecture as an "object". The fourth chapter "Function" reveals the process that paper architecture operates on theory and practice, and the transformation value to Chinese modern architecture.This thesis first redounds to further understanding of western architecture history and the active architecture ideology of contemporary avant-guard; secondly offers coordinate to let us orientate in the society; thirdly calls out a high regard for the value of paper architecture in the aspects of architecture education, theory-to-practice and forming a healthy design system.
