Vehicle-Navigation Syslem(VNS) is a kind of technology to implement the real-time control and query to the vehicle information, such as location, speed, course and surrounding geographic information etc, and provide an optimum missions and routes for the drivers. Nowadays VNS is more and more dependent on the integration use of Global Posi t ioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, e.g. geo-spatial information acqui ring and underlying navigation map constructing. With the help of VNS, drivers can easily identify the vehicle related location information as well as the traffic information timely. In this case it would be possible to pick out an idea routes to the destination rapidly and safely even in the fully unfamiliar environment. The thesis reviews the history of VNS and presents an introduction of VNS development currently. Through the illustration of the practical application of GIS based navigation map in VNS. The works of this thesis are as the below:The basic theory analysis of the navigation map and the expression methods of the digital map adopted are carried out and studied respectively, such as the features of digital map and the standards of constructing navigation map. Then, the detail design on navigation digital map as well as the database to meet the VNS' requirements is accomplished. The common development methods of GIS application are analyzed and compared in the thesis. The author proposes adopting integrated secondary development way based on GIS component. Considering the software development schedule, cost and efficient, the author adapts SuperMap Objects of Beijing SuperMap Corp for software development after taking fully account of various factors involved, including the selection of GIS platform vendors, the vendor' s qualification, function of spatial analysis, opening of secondary development environment, performance/price ratio as well as available resource. Meanwhile, the author performs a thorough studyon the Super.Vlap Objects, laying a sol id foundation for the development of VNS.The functional requirements of VNS answer the key question of what the system can do. Through analyzing structure of the system, the overall design scheme is promoted which comprises overall design of platform, the establishment, of software development platform, and detail design on the interactive interface and each functional module. Some navigation functions have been realized, including the basic functions, I'or example, zooming out and zooming in of navigation map and layer operation. Some other functions such as hawk eye query of navigation map, map attribute interactive query, location query and so on . The system possesses features showing the real-time location of vehicle in navigation map and selectively, replaying the trace of vehicle and analyzing of the optimum routes from the beginning to the destination. The advantages of the system include compact structure, reliability of function, fast application response and easy expansibility. Finally, some useful conclusions and suggestions for further studies are summarized and remarked.
