The street lane space is the most ocular reflection of a historical town. The street lane space bears the weight of every functional activity of towns too. The important functions of the street lane space, determine that at present and in a very long time in the future, the protection of it will be regarded as one of the most important protection contents of historical towns (district) The street lane space of the Mountain Historical Towns located in a complicated mountain region, forms its unique style and features, pleasant yardstick, simple and elegant tone, abundant patterns, multi-angle view through a long historical baptism, all of which leave a deep impression on people. But unfortunately, influenced by nature, society and economy, etc, the street lane space is losing its elegance of the past gradually. How to keep the style and characteristic of the street lane space of the Mountain Historical Towns intact, and how to make the street space meet the demands of modernized development of towns, are the urgent problems need to be solved. The essay is produced under such background, and the contents of the essay are divided into five parts altogether: The first part is chapter one. It states the significance of this research, the current situation in and out of China and the researching approach of the essay, and also puts forward the framework of the essay. The second part is chapter two and chapter three. Chapter two studies the formative environment of the street lane space of the Mountain Historical Towns, and analyses the impact of environment, traditional planning idea, and society on the form and pattern of street lane space. Chapter three analyzes the street lane space of the Mountain Historical Towns, studies the four characteristics of street lane space, i.e. the function, form, view and characteristic of construction. The third part is chapter four. This chapter states that the street lane space of the Mountain Historical Towns faces a great deal of problems, and through analysis it draw a conclusion that the natural environment, social economy, management, and technology are the main factors causing the destroy of the street lane space at present. The fourth part is chapter five and the chapter six. Chapter five confirms the protective principles of the street lane space, proposes the methods for protecting the street lane space of the Mountain Historical Towns from natural, historical, and humane angle. Through the analysis of two protecting examples, chapter six utilizes the methods put forward in chapter six. The fifth part is chapter seven. This chapter is a conclusion of the essay, summarizing all the standpoints of this essay.
