The continuous development of social economy brings new opportunities and challenges to the development of ancient towns, valuable historical cultural heritage of mankind. However,at present, the protection and planning of ancient towns in China still focus on the restoration and development of physical environment of ancient towns, with the main purpose of improving tourism development and material living conditions of local residents. Therefore, functional layout and land use patterns in planning are usually based on local regional needs and are constrained by people's long-term fixed behavior patterns.Scientific macro-spatial structure control and research from the perspective of resource management are still insufficient.Space syntax theory provides a scientific explanation of people's behavior and social activities from the perspective of spatial structure, and thus is widely used in the fields of spatial analysis, traffic pollution control and road-finding process. In this study,to lay a scientific starting point for the research, the author first expounds the background and significance of this study, illustrate relevant theories and studies of ancient town protection, introduces the core theory of spatial syntax, its analysis and quantitative description methods, and analyses the practicability of space syntax. On this basis,Anju Ancient Town, one of the 28 famous historical and cultural towns in Chongqing announced in 2010,is selected as the research object.Firstly, the author qualitatively analyzes the street and lane from the aspects of natural environment, regional architecture and pattern of walls. Then she uses the axes analysis method to quantify the spatial form of streets and lanes of the ancient town.Based on the data calculated by Depthmap syntactic software, the results of standardized syntactic variables like integration degree, selectivity degree and comprehensibility degree are obtained.Through the analysis of spatial structure of the streets and regional human activities, the characteristics and development trends of street space in Anju Ancient Town are revealed, the core dynamic area of space and the existing disadvantage space are determined. In addition, according to the results of the study and analysis, and by combining them with the planning status of the local government, the author puts forward specific suggestions for street space improvement and layout design, which involves traffic management, tourism development, pollution control, tourists visiting routes,route-finding process and other issues. As a useful attempt to analyze the spatial form and spatial cognition of ancient towns under the background of rapid urbanization, this study provides a new technical method and research perspective for the research and planning of the spatial form of historical and cultural towns in southwest China.Through quantitative analysis of depth.,the author hopes to open up a more objective logic in urban renewal design, promote the renewal of spatial structure and regional sustainable development, and allocate space resources effectively.Hopefully, this study can provide convincing analysis and enlightenment for research, protection, renewal and planning of historic and cultural towns, and it is a beneficial attempt for the spatial form and spatial cognitive analysis of ancient towns.
