Traffic simulation is a technique of reproducing the dynamic process of traffic flow and is able to reflect complicated traffic phenomena by means of computer mathematics models. It can be widely used in many aspects such as evaluation of traffic management system design and road geometry design, traffic theory study, traffic safety analysis, new technologies and concepts testing. It has been an important assessment implement of the application of intelligent transportation systems (ITS).The paper analyzes road traffic micro simulation modeling and studies the application of traffic simulation to traffic engineering combining with new technology of computer simulation. Based on the theoretical studies and application analysis of route selection model, the paper brings forward a modified road network. The main results show as following: a new road network model is brought forward and the corresponding representations for some special or complex cases are given; to achieve better data management and efficiency enhancement, the solution that the data of the road network and topological structure is separated in physics and combined in logic is proposed; route selection model is designed and the programming of the road network is realized with C language by making use of graph ergode. Moreover the test and the analysis of a little road network is done.Moreover, the article also makes a study of traffic management with the simulation software TSIS. The application to traffic management is to conclude the influence of different control measures to traffic characteristics through the simulation analysis of certain highway in Hunan province. By comparison, it can be seen which control measure can make it better to improve traffic capacity and service level, decrease fuel consumption and noise and save economic loss.
