Research Of Responsive Housing

The public housing today in China is undergoing a historic development. Public housing has become an increasing point of national economy and a new hot point of people's consumption. However, in the face of this situation, the design theory and method among professionals considerably lag behind, which has limited the development of public housing.Kunming is a marginal city in China. Due to special historic background and marginal culture, its modern transform of housing types has own peculiarities and rules, which differ from central "mainstream" cities in China. Through reviewing historic development of Kunming's housing, a study on the responsive housing is considered necessarily.After looking back all kinds application of responsive theory, the paper summarizes the theories and design cases on responsive housing in China and abroad and discusses characters of responsive housing system through complex system, process and open system three aspects. Moreover, the paper analyses that the vitality of similar-life housing is dwelling behavior. Based on dwelling behavior, a responsive concept of housing is built on the environment, social culture and technology three levels.Out of the responsive concept and everyday resident life on contemporary cities, the paper discuses the relationship between the dwelling behaviors of contemporary Kunming people, the moderate size of housing space and the responsive housing.Finally, the paper attempts to seek for folk, non-elite design methods-"responsive" housing design methods-which is based on dwelling behaviors of Kunming residents. And the technology and social mechanisms are considered in order to put the methods into practice. The paper will take some housing design advises for architects and residents.
